Can I employ my own carer ?

The answer is yes – The Social Care (Self-Directed Support)(Scotland) Act 2013 was created to help people have better lives by making sure that people can get the kind of support they want, where and when they want it.

They have access to the same freedom and choices as others at home , at work or in the community.

The law instructs local councils to listen to what people want so that they can get the support that is right for them.

Option 1 on Self Directed Support - You take a direct payment from the local council when they have completed their care assessment to check the level of care you may require and how best to support your needs.

Does my carer work for Scottish Carers?

Scottish Carers is an introduction company who help match the self-employed carers on our network to families and individuals who need them. You will select the carer that you think best fits your needs and will employ them directly – we have a team of trained staff that will assist you with this.

Our strict vetting process only permits the best carers in your area to be registered with us. We interview each candidate and complete checks on their right to work in the UK, their experience levels and qualifications and ensure that they have an up-to-date PVG registration. We also request that they also provide us with 2 references from previous employment.

Can I pay for my care myself?

Of course – the carer will be employed directly by you; they do not need any information on how their services are funded. If you are entitled to government support for your care then this can also be used to pay for the carer’s services. Please see our page on Financial Support for more information on benefits and financial support you may be entitled to.

Are there any hidden costs that I might need to pay?

The costs associated with your care should be agreed directly with the carer – Scottish Carers do not charge individuals looking for care for our services, the carer pays a small administration fee to us for introduction purposes. We believe in transparency for our members and provide them with full information on the benefits of joining our organisation.

How long does the contract with my carer last?

You set the terms of your contract with the carer. You may only require short-term care or even live-in care, this information should be agreed and recorded for both parties to ensure full understanding of what the required level of support is needed.

If you feel at any point that you do not wish to carry on the business relationship, then the terms of how you will end the agreement should be agreed at the start of the contract.

How quickly can I arrange care?

Our carers are often available for immediate starts, depending on their availability. When you have selected to contact one of the carers on our website, we will call you to chat about your requirements including when you would like support.
